Expressionism and Abstract Expressionism - In the early part of the 20th century Expressionist artists attempted to express art through more emotional means than the more traditional realistic depictions. Abstract Expressionism built upon that experience by breaking away from tradition even more, depicting new subject matter painted in completely different techniques.
